The show has child-acceptable cartoon violence, war crimes, genocide, parent death, mind control, psychological abuse, enslavement, and all kinds of forced fusion and mental not-okayness. The movie does too.
Steven Universe Future, however, digs really deep into the themes of psychological trauma and recovery, in ways that were EXCRUCIATING to watch as adults (though in a very satisfying way). There's a reason people sometimes call it Steven Universe Feelings: emotions and dealing with them are a huge part of this show.
